Firstly we would like to thank all supporters who used the OSC coach transport to Exeter last weekend.  We are sure that the majority of you will agree that it was a successful trip despite the result. However we would like to take this opportunity to apologise to those supporters who travelled on Bus 1.

It has come to light that one individual appeared to be highly intoxicated and became abusive and threatening to fellow passengers and OSC representatives. We do not condone such actions and behaviour such as this will not be tolerated. Any perpetrators will be banned from future travel with the OSC.  We do not want to tarnish the fantastic reputation that our supporters have.

The OSC representatives who travelled on the coaches are volunteers who give up their own time to make sure that all supporters have a smooth and enjoyable journey.  They do not need to be subjected to abuse.  The same can be said for fellow passengers.

We are all travelling to away games with the same sole purpose, to support the Ospreys and have a good time, and we want to this to take place in a safe and inclusive environment on all trips

Former OSC secretary, Paul Harris, is taking part in the 31st Marathon Des Sables in April 2016.

What’s that ?

It’s a multi day self sufficiency ultra marathon, glad that’s cleared that up !

So lets break it down, ultra marathon, is a name given to any run over 33 miles, this one is around 155 miles in total!tircoeds2

Multi day, it’s run over a total of 6 days, with a break on the 5th day making 7 in total. The first 3 days are between 20 – 22 miles long, The fourth day is about 55 miles long, while day 5, is either a rest day or you’re still finishing day 4 ! Day six is a marathon and day 7 is a 10k ‘fun run’.

Doesn’t sound so hard does it, apart from the fact that its being run in the Sahara Desert, where daytime temperatures can top 50°C while at night they plummet to just 5°C !

If covering that distance, in that heat isn’t enough, lets explain the self sufficiency bit ! Everything that is needed for the 7 days must be carried in the competitors rucksack (with the exception of the tent & water .. 7 days worth of water much too heavy). So, sleeping bag, spare running kit, food for 7 days, cooker, fuel for the cooker must be carried on your back. Along with a long list of mandatory items, including a venom pump … yep, that’s not a typo, it does indeed say venom pump ! It’s expected that the rucksack will weigh around 10kg!

Paul is running it to raise money for the NSPCC. Even today, after all the success of childline, its still a sad fact that 25% of all calls to childline go unanswered due to an insufficient number of trained counsellors.

Paul is looking for sponsorship and if you wish to help, he’d be delighted if you could email him on tircoeds@googlemail.com.  In particular, business sponsorship is of great interest, where company names / logos’ can be placed on his running kit / ruck sack / even the venom pump.

He says fundraising is going well, with a planned fundraising night on the 14th November in the Old Inn, Penllergaer, where there will be a raffle, music and a charity auction. Again, if anyone can supply some rugby memorabilia for auction Paul would be truly grateful.

Hopefully, we’ll report back in the new year with a story of him successfully completing the run!

A group of supporters who won the signed Ospreys Shirt in yesterday’s raffle has kindly donated this back to us so we can auction it off and all funds to be donated to The Jerry Collins Memorial fund.

Unfortunately we did not get the group’s name but we want to thank the 3 gentlemen for this generous offer. If you know who they are please let us know.

The shirt is last season’s shirt (unframed) and we ask anyone interested in bidding please send an email to secretary@ospreyssupportersclub.com with the amount you would like to bid.

Each day we will post and tweet the amount of highest bid for that day so you are all aware what needs to be beaten.

The bidding opens Tuesday 15th September at 9am and closes 8pm Sunday 20th September.

JC RIP

The Ospreys Supporters Club together with the rest of the Joint Supporters Group are extremely pleased to announce that representatives from the four regional supporters groups will be attending a meeting with the soon to-be WRU Chief Executive, Martyn Phillips on Monday 7th September.

The JSG group kindly received a very positive letter from Mr Phillips in recent weeks which outlined his vision for the future of Welsh rugby, and resulted in an invite to meet with the man himself.

After our very successful meeting with Gareth Davies and Mark Davies on Judgement Day, together with the invite from Mr Phillips, we are pleased to say that communications between the JSG and the WRU are much improved and stronger, and we hope that our relationship can continue to build in a positive manner.

We would like to thank Mr Phillips for his invite and we look forward to meeting him.

We will report back to all members after the meetingJSG

We received this earlier from Terry Williams from Camborne RFC – it looks like the day was a major success!

“I am writing on behalf of Camborne RFC to thank the Ospreys supporters for the gift of £400 towards a charity held at our club on June 13, organised by Josh Matavesi and his brothers. The object was to raise money for a rehabilitation hospital in Hayle, Cornwall, where Josh’s father is a long term patient.

The total raised for the charity was £17,000, and our bar take was £20,000 and the club made a further £5000 profit on the day. I thought I would pass this on as you were kind enough to support us on the day. There was a crowd of 3000.

Many thanks and good luck for the coming season.

With the Rugby World Cup approaching and ITV having exclusive broadcast rights, you’ve got to be curious of the quality of coverage that will grace our television screens.

However, ITV have named a really strong lineup:

Laawrence Dallaglio, Jonny Wilkinson, Sir Clive Woodward, Jason Robinson, Gareth Thomas, George Gregan, BOD, Sir Ian McGeechan, Fancois Piennar, Sean Fitzpatrick, Michael Lynagh, David Flatman & Maggie Alphonsi

BMcLNobody will ever compare the late, great Bill McLaren who’s prose lit up the rugby world, but this is a chance for you to vote for your favourite TV pundit currently gracing our screens.

If you’re torn and can’t pick just one, you can vote for up to 5 pundits.

Voting closes at the end of the June and the winner will receive a Liberty Stadium Pie from the OSC committee on their next visit to the Riverside Bar.  The lowest polling pundit will receive TWO Liberty Stadium Pies if they ever dare to come and see us.

Thanks for your vote

Jerry Collins 1980-2015

Jerry Collins 1980-2015

We were all shocked and deeply saddened to hear the passing of ex-Osprey and All Black legend Jerry Collins together with his wife Alana early this morning.

We’re sure we can speak on behalf of all Ospreys supporters, when we say that he will be truly missed. His physicality and edge made him the back row enforcer that everyone – both his peers and opponents, came to respect. Not only on the international stage, but also when he proudly pulled on the shirt of the Ospreys.

Jerry was at the heart of the Ospreys squad at the height of the so-called ‘Galactico’ era. The back row dominance of Collins, Holah and Jones culminated in us winning the Magners League title in 2010. He was also a prominent figure during our 2009/10 Heineken Cup campaign, with an almighty performance against Biarritz in San Sebastian during the Quarter Finals.

From a Supporters’ Club perspective, Jerry was always very supportive of the OSC. He always gave his time to talk to supporters, and had a great sense of humour. From browsing social media this morning, it’s evident to see how Jerry made an impact in so many peoples lives, not just with supporters, but with his young team mates too.

He may have only been in Ospreylia for a short period of time, but his legacy will live long for many years to come.

Once an Osprey, Always an Osprey

RIP Jerry and Alana.

In attendance: Gareth Davies (WRU), Mark Davies, Antonia Lamont (both PRW), Barrie Jones, Dorian Davies, Neil Bathgate, Nigel Jones, Nigel Maggs, Sarah Hopkins, Cath Smart, Chris Stork and Kevin Jarvis (all JSG).

Gareth Davies welcomed all to the meeting and expressed his thanks to all for attending advising that the WRU is in a very different place now compared with when the JSG last met with them in December 2013 and was looking forward to the WRU, PRW and JSG working together not in adversity.

The meeting was intended to set the scene for future meetings and dialogue and have a general update. The JSG thanked both the WRU and PRW for their proactive approach and the WRU and PRW confirmed they would be more than happy to meet with the JSG on a 6 monthly basis to give updates and listen to any concerns.

Using Judgement Day III as an example of a strong collaborative approach PRW highlighted how the improved relationship between the Regions and the WRU had allowed for the games to be jointly marketed. The Ospreys and Scarlets were effectively marketing an away game which is something that wouldn’t have happened historically and this is something other countries are particularly strong at and something that the Regions and the WRU can learn from sharing experiences and information.

The JSG queried what type of character the WRU were looking for in their search for a new CEO and what their focus would be on. Gareth Davies said that they were looking for a commercially focused CEO and a person who needed empathy for the game but not necessarily a fan of the game.

Gareth went on to advise that there are reviews underway of the structures and governance of the WRU and he would be looking for the board, which will shortly contain 2 newly appointed non-executive directors, to take on a more dynamic approach so the game in Wales can move forward with people having very clear roles and responsibilities. Gareth acknowledged that recent reviews needed to be revisited with a broader scope.

Gareth was keen to highlight the amount of work that currently goes on and wanted these efforts to be put into looking forward rather than dealing with a legacy giving several examples of how other unions have developed and what the WRU and PRW can learn from them.

One of the examples given was the succession planning for players where the Regions and WRU have historically worked separately and this is something that they are looking to change with the Welsh coaches very much on board with this.

The JSG asked for an update in respect of dual contracts and the impact of players leaving Wales as there appeared to be a lot of ambiguity around the selection criteria with phrases like ‘common sense approach’ and ‘best for Wales’ being used without any context. Gareth and Mark Davies advised that there was more detail around the criteria for players outside of Wales but with the dual contracts still being new and evolving there is still a lot of work going into how they will look long term with the WRU and regions working together to shape this.

The JSG queried how PRW and the WRU were looking to address the gap between the Pro12 and other domestic European leagues. Mark Davies confirmed that in European terms the funding gap will reduce over the course of the current agreement with the regions position improving year on year and that the Pro12 was looking to appoint a Managing Director solely for the Pro12 and will be looking to go to the broadcasters as soon as feasibly possibly to negotiate new packages well in advance of the expiring of the existing deals. Mark Davies also commented that there were opportunities to significantly improve revenues from the Pro12’s international market and praised Gerald Davies’ input and leadership in his role as Pro12 Chairman.

Fixtures, both in respect of patterns and the amount of notice given to supporters, were queried and Mark Davies advised that both were ongoing discussions. The derby matches at certain points of the season was something that all the teams in the league were keen to maintain which makes the pattern of matches difficult to change, he also advised that teams sharing stadiums also impacts fixture patterns significantly.

In respect of the amount of notice given for exact fixture dates and times this is something that they are looking to improve and are due to meet the broadcasters in the next few weeks to hopefully move this forward. The league matches during the World Cup will also be arranged sensitively around the international matches and with there being no LV Cup this season fixtures will be able to catch up in this period and during the 6 nations.

The standard of refereeing was raised by the JSG and Mark Davies confirmed that this is something that the league is aware of and was actively looking to improve with Ed Morrision (Independent Referee Commissioner for the Pro12) working closely with the Unions with the clubs being strongly represented by the likes of Steve Tandy and Gregor Townsend amongst others.

The JSG expressed their sincere thanks to the WRU and PRW for their time and commitment to listen to the supporters and to build on the relationship with regular meetings.
